Solving your soggy yard

Over many years of assessing landscapes, developing solutions, and installing drainage systems, the Drainage Technicians at J B Lawn Sprinklers have learned plenty about drainage solutions. Many of the homeowners, business owners, property managers, and HOAs that we’ve assisted over the past 15 years knew little about drainage but walked away understanding much more due to our education and solutions. No property owner enjoys having a “soggy” yard so the J B Lawn Sprinklers Team decided to write about our top ‘5 Tips to know about Drainage Solutions.’

1. Diagnose the problem

A solution is only as strong as the diagnosis of the problem. Fortunately, if you’re able to understand why you’re having drainage issues, there is almost always a fix to the problem. When J B Lawn Sprinklers sends our trained Drainage Technicians, they evaluate the issues based on where the problem is originating, what is causing that problem to exist, and what is the most effective path to a resolution.

2. Choose the right solution

There is no limit to the available drainage solutions. There are French drains, trench drains, catch basins, surface drains, gravity drain and pump systems, channel drains, and foundation drains just to name a few! What we offer is the ability to explain in clear terms why we’re recommending a specific drainage solution, what is the timeline to get this drainage solution installed, and what the cost is going to be.

3. Keep gutter and water drains clear

We can’t tell you how many times we’ve been called out to someone’s home for a drainage problem to learn that the issue started and ended with clogged gutters and drains. When gutter systems become clogged with leaves, branches, pine needles, mud, and other debris, it means the system can’t flow properly. When the gutters or downspout can’t drain properly, water will fill up the gutters causing water to pour off the side of the gutter system, drown flower beds and pool near the foundation of the home. In extreme cases, this rainwater can damage the foundation of your home. By unclogging your gutters and downspouts by hand or by pressure jetter, you can do so much for the integrity of your home with an hour of your time.

4. Landscape Grading

The challenge of living in the beautiful coastal area of North Carolina is the lack of grade. Water that pools in and around your yard isn’t necessarily the problem; it’s the inability to drain. Think of water sitting around your foundation or yard as a symptom of the real problem, which there is no elevation to help water drain. Many drainage solutions require grading in some fashion so we can create the angle needed to solve the water runoff problem.

5. Keep Drainage System Clear

After installing your selected drainage system, always make sure to keep your system cleared at all times. Whether it be the pipes, basin, downspout, gutters, or any part of the drainage system, keeping these clear is pivotal to home health. Blocked drains lead to flooded yards and water around the foundation of your home, bringing you right back to where you started. If you notice clogging in your drainage system, companies like J B Lawn Sprinklers have pressure jetters that will clear out any debris.
